For Children and Youth
Books
The Goodbye Book, Children’s book, by Todd Parr
Bright colorful pages, with simple language for littles
A sweet tale of a beloved classroom pet who died, told by a teacher and her students. This book has a nice, racially diverse range of characters.

Directed towards adults: How to tell children and youth about the death of a loved one (with consideration to age) and consider their needs in the arrangements.
35 Ways to Help a Grieving Child
Directed towards the adults in a child’s life.
Directed towards the adults in a teen’s life.
When Dinosaurs Die, children’s book
Offers age appropriate explanation of death and reasons why people may die. Covers logistics of what happens after a death, and how people may feel and behave when grieving. I’ve used this in many grief groups with children and find it sparks good discussion.
Lifetimes: A Beautiful Way to Explain Death to Children
Illustrations may look a bit outdated, but this is a lovely way to normalize death, the lifespan, and the impermanent nature of life on earth. I’ve used this in grief groups with children many times!

This video is well put-together with both child and adult voices reading the story.

This is another well done video. It makes the book come alive with music, special effects, clear audio and a gentle narrator.
