Online Counseling With Children

Have you heard that I not only do counseling with kids, but that I do it online? And are you wondering how in the world that can be done? Well, you are not alone, my friend. Usually people are shocked to find out that therapy can be done, and done well with children, and online counseling can be a good option for many families! 

I absolutely love working with kids and want people to know how rich counseling can be with children and caregivers. That’s why I’m so excited to share this series with you about online counseling with kids.

This week I’ll be talking about children on the younger side, about 10 and under, and how counseling can look for that group. 

In a snap shot:

• Caregivers Play a Big Role
  I will work to support and give caregivers the tools, skills and techniques to work hands on and directly with the child during and in between sessions

• Some work is one-on-one, and sometimes it’s more of a small group.
  Sessions may be with caregivers only at times and at times with both caregivers and child

• Sessions are goal focused
  Parents will talk with me in the first session and will decide on the goals and focus of the child’s treatment. We’ll come up with a plan on how to accomplish our goals and how often we’ll meet

• At times, counselor directed
  Sessions with the child are planned for ahead of time and will include things like puppets, crafts, stories, songs, play, games, hand-on practice and skill-building activities.

• At times, child-led
  I will have a simple, planned/presented activity related to the child’s goals, but for this age, I will likely spend a lot of time building social emotional awareness through child-led play.

Something I love about working with little ones is getting to support the adults in their lives. This is a crucial piece to the puzzle because caregivers and folks who work with kids have so much power to build resilience and foster healing and growth in children. That's why I will work actively with caregivers to reinforce their strengths and growth areas. I also love working with school staff if your kiddo needs some support at school as well.
