Out In Nature: Peer Support Group

Out In Nature (OIN) is an inclusive, nature-focused group for queer women and femme-identifying individuals who love the outdoors. We meet biweekly in and around Sampson County, NC to explore local parks through activities like hiking, birdwatching, and more. This is a safe, supportive space to foster community, deepen connections with nature, and find solace in like-minded peers who understand the unique challenges of navigating a heteronormative society.

What is a Peer Support Group?
A peer support group is a gathering of individuals who come together to share common experiences, offer mutual support, and build a sense of community. These groups can reduce feelings of isolation, boost mental health, and empower members to embrace their authentic selves.

Vision and Mission
The mission of OIN is to create a supportive, affirming, and adventurous community for queer women and femme-identifying people, where we can explore the natural world and connect with others. For queer women and non-binary folks, affinity groups like this offer a much-needed space for belonging and authentic self-expression. Rural areas often lack visible queer representation, so this group seeks to provide that sense of community, representation, and joy in the great outdoors.

Who is the Facilitator?

My name is Olivia White (she/her), and I’m thrilled to be the facilitator for this group. I am a therapist, coach, and consultant who moved to North Carolina from Washington state in 2023. I identify as queer and neurodivergent, and I currently reside on the traditional land of the Cohaire tribe, in Sampson County, NC. I have a passion for the natural world and enjoy wildlife identification as a hobby entomologist and naturalist. In my free time, I love drawing, playing the ukulele, gardening and reading. It is my hope that through this group, we can collectively nurture our love for the outdoors and build meaningful, lasting connections with one another.

Group Principles of Cultivating a Relationship with Nature

SIT
Find a special nature spot to sit and observe regularly, whether daily or weekly. Get to know the surroundings and patterns intimately. Observe how the environment changes with the seasons, and take note of the ebb and flow of plant and animal life. This quiet practice fosters a deep connection with nature.

ENGAGE
Structured and unstructured time outdoors will encourage us to develop new skills, explore creativity, and engage with nature in various ways. From identifying species to drawing and journaling, you’ll have the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the natural world.

WANDER
When you explore your surroundings, be mindful and present. Even in familiar places, there’s always something new to notice. Wander with curiosity, and embrace the beauty of the outdoors with fresh eyes.

Group Principles of Cultivating Relationships with Self and Others

REFLECT
During many of our events, we’ll have quiet moments for self-reflection. These may involve listening to a poem, participating in meditation, or engaging in art-making. Take this time to reflect on your own inner experience and identity, learning more about yourself in the process.

SHARE
Allow yourself to take up space and be supported by the group. Share your experiences, thoughts, talents, and passions. Push against self-limiting thoughts and know that you have something valuable to contribute.

CARRY
As others share their experiences, hold space for them. Listen deeply, show kindness, and express gratitude for the diversity of experiences and voices within the group. This reciprocal care strengthens our bonds as a community.

Nitty Gritty: Logistics and Planning

Dressing for the Occasion

Dress appropriately for the weather and activity. We may meet in a variety of weather conditions, so it’s essential to prepare. Here are some recommendations:

  • Warm Weather: Hiking shoes, sun protection, swimwear, and light clothing.

  • Cold Weather: Warm socks, thermal layers, winter coats, and gloves.

  • Other Essentials: Sunscreen, bug spray, water, snacks, binoculars, first aid kit, and nature journals. Smartphone apps for identifying plants, animals, and insects can also enhance your experience.

Communicating

Our community stays connected through a private Discord group. Here, we’ll run polls, plan events, share information about locations, and post updates, photos, and announcements. If you ever need to leave the group, please inform the organizer so you can be removed from the list and others who may be on the waitlist can join.

Special Accommodations
If you have any disabilities or accommodations that need to be considered for planning, please let me know. I will provide as much trail and location information as possible beforehand. The group is beginner-friendly, and no advanced outdoor skills are necessary.

Membership Application
Membership in OIN is $30 per year. Please complete the Google form and submit payment to join. Once registered, you’ll gain access to our private Discord group and be kept informed of all upcoming events and activities.
